In this narration, the central character reviews his prolonged existence, of almost a thousand years, and relates the events that have led him to a punishment as harsh as it is unjust. It is for this reason that he writes his Letter to the Queen of England. From the middle ages to the thereshold of the year 2000, the author of the letter has practised all vices and savoured all pleasures: he has frequented palaces and salons, has met wise and powerful men, has loved many women in many different languages and has visited many countries. This long life has served to identify with precision his enemies: tedium and the State.
